Spring Home Safety Check
As more people are spending more time at home over the upcoming weeks, we wanted to share a couple of helpful safety tips. And now that spring is here, this could be a great time to do a quick home safety check! Here are a couple of quick tips to help keep you and your family safe:
-
Change your furnace filter! Your furnace filter should be changed at least three times during heating season to make sure it runs safely and efficiently.
-
Keep the area around your furnace and gas appliances clear, to make sure they continue running properly.
-
Test your carbon monoxide detector and change the batteries. Make sure your family knows the signs of C.O. poisoning.
-
Check your outdoor appliance exhausts to make sure they’re clear. Bird nests and stink bugs have been cited as the cause for some furnace vent problems.
-
Doing yardwork or gardening? Never tie your dog to a gas meter, or use it to hang a garden hose or other tools.
-
Keep an eye out for scams. Whether it’s door-to-door, over the phone, or online, criminals may try to pose as a utility company. Get tips about avoiding scams here.

Staying safe also includes staying safe online. With current events revolving around the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s understandable that you want to click on articles, emails and other information that may be sent to you. While it is important to educate yourself on COVID-19, be careful when doing research. You can visit the CDC’s website for reliable information.
