The Tale of the Smelly Dog
Once upon a time there was a young couple named Alex and Olivia living in a house in Highland Park. Alex worked from home as a freelance writer, and Olivia worked as a financial consultant downtown. They had recently purchased the old Victorian fixer-upper and, if they were being honest, their favorite part was the awesome backyard for their dopey mutt, Eddie. And the ice cream shop right down the street.
One Saturday morning, the couple was sitting on their back porch enjoying the warm summer breeze. Olivia got up to toss a ball for Eddie when all of a sudden she smelled something gross—like a garbage bag full of leftovers roasting in the sun, gross—coming from the yard next door.
Olivia called Alex over and they unlatched the gate between the yards to investigate. Before they could stop him, Eddie darted through the fence and started rolling on the neighbor’s grass. Alex shooed Eddie out of the smelly yard while Olivia walked around to the front of the house and knocked. The door opened to reveal the disgruntled face of Harry, who clearly hadn’t had his coffee yet.
“Morning!” Olivia said, trying to be cheerful. She re-introduced herself as the new neighbor and explained that there was a bad smell coming from Harry’s backyard.
“Sewer line’s busted,” Harry grunted, annoyed that this chipper woman came over to tell him something he already knew.
After a little more prompting, Harry revealed that he’d gotten quotes to replace the sewer line, but it was going to cost thousands, so he was going to try to fix it himself first.
Olivia left feeling frazzled. When she got back to the house, she found Alex scrubbing the stink off of Eddie in the bathtub. In between the dog shaking suds all over the walls and making a soppy break for the door, they started talking about Harry’s situation. They were worried about problems with their own pipelines, knowing that they couldn’t afford a thousand-dollar fix when they had just purchased a new house.
“Wait a second,” said Alex, wrestling Eddie with a towel. “Doesn’t Peoples offer some kind of pipeline protection? I feel like I saw that online.”
A quick Google search, and there it was: the Peoples Protection Program. The couple did a little more research and decided to go for it. The online sign up was considerably easier than giving their hyper dog a bath, anyway.
