Keep your gas meter in top condition this winter by following a few simple steps.
Rest assured, your gas meter is relatively weatherproof and requires very little maintenance. But you can keep it in top working condition this winter by following these simple safety tips:

Never tie your pet to a gas meter, or use it to hang a garden hose or other tools.

Shrubs, snow, and debris can block the path to your meter. Keeping a clear path to your gas meter allows our employees to perform routine maintenance and also gives first responders quick access in an emergency.

Snow and ice can accumulate on a meter, making it difficult to read and threatening its proper operation. Remove snow and ice from your natural gas meter with a broom or brush. But NEVER kick or try to chip snow and ice away with a hard object.

Look up! Gutters and overhangs accumulate ice, which could break off and damage a meter—or melt during the day and freeze in regulator vents at night. Safely remove ice accumulation when possible.

Keep meters at least three feet away from ignition sources and from appliance vents or intakes.

Never hang a light bulb near a meter for heat.

Never box in or wrap your meter with insulation, blankets or plastic—gas meters require open air around them!
