Meter Safety

Although natural gas meters are relatively weatherproof and require little maintenance, these safety tips will help keep you, your family and others safe:

* Never tie (tether) pets to gas meters, or use gas meters to hang garden hoses or other tools.
* Plants, shrubs, snow and debris can block the dial face or pathway to the meter. Keeping a clear path to your gas meter not only helps Peoples employees performing routine maintenance but also allows emergency responders quick access should the need arise.
* Be careful when mowing or weed-whacking around the meter.
* In the winter, snow and ice can accumulate on a meter which may affect operation. Remove snow and ice from your meter with a broom or brush, but never kick or try to chip it off with a hard object.

About Gas Meters

The meter is an important part of the infrastructure that delivers natural gas to your home. It is the place where the flow of gas can be controlled, and how we measure the amount of gas used by a customer.

As part of our ongoing commitment to safety and reliability, Peoples Natural Gas is in the midst of a comprehensive program to replace existing meters with the state-of-the-art Intelis 250 meter, at no charge to our customers.

Customer Service technicians are currently changing meters throughout our service territory. To date, nearly 125,000 customers have received a new meter, strengthening their home’s infrastructure. Meter replacements take approximately 30 - 45 minutes with only a minimal service disruption. After changing the meter, Peoples technicians will conduct a safety check and relight your appliances, meaning you must be home at the appointment time.

While Peoples customers are responsible for the service line that connects their home or business to our main line, as well as any interior piping, Peoples maintains ownership and responsibility for the meter itself. Your New Intelis Meter

Enhancing Safety and Reliability for Natural Gas Homeowners. As part of our ongoing commitment to safety and reliability, Peoples Natural Gas has developed a comprehensive program to replace meters at no charge to our customers. We are always seeking to innovate and improve our technology and when your meter needs to be replaced, our team will install a state-of-the-art Intelis 250 meter manufactured by Itron, a leading provider of natural gas meters with the latest in gas meter technology.

How does it work? The Intelis 250 meter uses ultrasonic technology to automatically shut off the gas in your home if it detects unusually high volumes of gas or extreme temperatures. This feature provides an extra layer of safety and protection in your home.

No Service Interruptions. We are installing new meters for customers during routine service visits to cause minimal disruption. Once your new meter is installed, you should not experience any changes in your natural gas service.

Safety First for Technicians. When we install your Intelis 250 meter, we place safety notices on your furnace and/or water heater to inform plumbers and appliance technicians of best practices working with the new meters. These technicians should adhere to the safety features to avoid activating the meter shut off technology, which could result in the temporary loss of service. If you’re a plumber, please visit our Plumbers page to view important safety information regarding the Intelis 250 meters.

Qualified Professionals. Peoples recommends only qualified professionals work on gas appliances, piping or related infrastructure.

FAQs

How will the Intelis 250 meters benefit me?

The Intelis 250 meter has new, state-of-the-art safety features which enable the meter to automatically shut off the gas if it detects unusually high volumes of gas, or extreme high temperatures. While all meters are safe, this new feature adds an additional layer of protection. Switching to these meters is a routine process and part of our comprehensive plan to replace customer meters, with no change to your bill or routine gas service.

Who will be doing the installation work?

Peoples technicians will install the Intelis 250 meter. Our skilled technicians always travel in company vehicles and carry identification for your peace of mind. You must be home during the installation process to allow technicians to enter your home, safely turn off your appliances and replace the meter. They will shut off the gas, remove the old meter and install your new meter. The technicians will then restore gas service and relight your appliances, performing all required safety checks along the way. The process will take approximately 30-45 minutes. Once you have completed the above survey, a Peoples representative will contact you to schedule your meter installation. We are also conducting meter changes during pipeline replacement projects and other service calls.

What happens if myself, or a service technician trigger the emergency gas shut off?

The enhanced safety technology of the Intelis 250 meter directs a valve within the meter to automatically close shut and stop the flow of gas if it detects unusually high volumes of gas, or extreme high temperatures. It is imperative that you or a qualified service technician follows the instructions and safety precautions listed on our Plumbers page. Failure to do so may result in the temporary loss of natural gas service to your home.

Do I have to pay for this?

No, meter replacements are included with your Peoples service.

How to Read a Meter

  1. Start with the left dial, and read the dials from left to right.
  2. If the pointer is between two numbers, always select the lower number.
  3. When the pointer is between "9" and "0," then "9" is considered the lower number.
  4. If the pointer is DIRECTLY on the number, look at the dial to the right. If the pointer on the right has not passed "0," record the lower number.

A. The pointer is between 2 and 3, so this dial reads 2. (The arrow indicates the direction the pointer is moving.)

B. The pointer of this dial registers 5

C. Do you read this 4 or 3? A quick check of the dial to the right shows its pointer has passed the zero point. The third digit in your reading is therefore 4.

D. The pointer is between 0 and 1 so this dial reads 0.
