Not only is stealing natural gas illegal, it's a serious safety risk. We've created a gas theft hotline for people to report gas theft. If you suspect that someone is stealing natural gas, please report it to 1-866-534-9094 or GasTheft@peoples-gas.com.
Start or Modify Gas Service
Are you a residential customer looking to start, stop, or transfer your gas service? We’re here to make it easy for you. If you’re moving into a home or apartment with an existing gas meter, we’ve got you covered. Need to stop service or end billing with us? You’re in the right place.
Are you a commercial customer looking to start or stop service? There are two types of requests depending on whether new gas meters or additional gas load is needed or not.

Residential Service
Are you a residential customer looking to start, stop, or transfer service? Are you moving into an apartment or house that currently has a gas meter at the property? We're here to help. If you are moving out or need to stop billing with us, you've also come to the right place.
Please note that if you need additional gas load or meters, please follow the instructions below.
You can use Peoples e-Account to start or stop gas service to your residence online! You’ll just need the following information:
- Service Address, including zip code
- Preferred Start or Stop Service Date
- Social Security Number (SSN)
- Income and occupancy details for residential start service requests
- Credit card or bank information for security deposit payment, if applicable (to begin service)
- Note: You must be the tenant or property owner responsible for paying the gas bill in order to start service with Peoples. You will not be able to start service on behalf of someone else.
If you do not want to start or stop service online, our customer service representatives are ready to assist you! Please give our Customer Service Center a call at 1-800-764-0111, Monday-Friday from 7:00am to 5:00pm. One of our friendly and knowledgeable representatives will guide you through the process and answer any questions you may have. Please have all the information above available before you call.
Additional Gas Load or Meter Required
If you need additional gas load or an additional gas meter, you must complete a Gas Service Application. This application is necessary to understand your residential gas needs, and is likely needed if you plan to:
- Renovate your residence (Additional Load and/or Split Meter)
- Install additional gas equipment or gas appliances (Additional Load)
- Split the space into subdivided units (Split Meter)
- Need additional gas meters (Split Meter)
If any of the above situations apply to you, you should complete the Gas Service Application. To complete the Gas Service Application, you will need the following information:
- Service Address(es), for each unit, if applicable
- List of all existing gas appliances
- List of any proposed gas appliances to be installed, if applicable
- Total BTU (or CFH) load for each gas appliance, both existing and being added (Note: This information may be found on the physical appliance or equipment manual.)
- All submitted applications will be reviewed and followed-up with by our New Construction Department

If you're looking to get gas service for the first time at a newly constructed building, or if you're interested in converting to natural gas (in a building where gas is not already being used), we're ready to help. Commercial Service
If you are a commercial customer, there are two types of "start or stop service" requests. Please read the information below carefully.
No New Gas Meter or Additional Load Required
If you want to start or stop your gas service, you don't need any additional meters or gas load, and there's already a gas meter at your property, then you can do so quickly and conveniently using Peoples e-Account. You're also welcome to start or stop service over the phone. Whether using Peoples e-Account online or giving us a call, you’ll need the following information:
- Service Address, including zip code
- Preferred Start or Stop Service Date
- Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN)
- Credit card or bank information for security deposit payment, if applicable (to begin service)
- Note: You must be the business owner or party responsible for paying the gas bill. You will not be able to start service on behalf of someone else.
- Once you have all of the information above, please download and complete the Commercial Credit Application.

Additional Gas Load or Split Meter Required
If you need additional gas load, you must complete the Commercial Credit Application above AND the Gas Service Application below. You will need to complete both the Commercial Credit Application and the Gas Service Application below if you plan to:
- Renovate your commercial space (Additional Load and/or Split Meter)
- Install additional gas equipment or gas appliances (Additional Load)
- Split the space into subdivided units (Split Meter)
- Need additional gas meters (Split Meter)
If any of the above situations apply to you, you’ll need to complete the Commercial Credit Application and the Gas Service Application. To complete the Gas Service Application, you will need the following information:
- Service Address(es) for each unit, if applicable
- List of ALL existing gas appliances
- List of any proposed gas appliances to be installed, if applicable
- Total BTU (or CFH) load for each gas appliance, both existing and being added (Note: This information may be found on the physical appliance or in the equipment manual.)
- All submitted applications will be reviewed and followed-up with by our New Construction Department
Landlord
Are you a landlord looking to start or stop service at one of your rental properties?
With Peoples e-Account, starting or stopping gas service in your home has never been easier.
You'll need the following info to start or stop service using e-Account:
- Preferred service start or date.
- Service address, including zip code.
- Social Security Number (SSN).
- Income and occupancy details for residential start service requests.
- Credit card or bank account information for security deposit payment (when starting service), if applicable.
If you're not ready to jump in online and complete this process using Peoples e-Account, then please give our Customer Service Center a call at 1-800-764-0111 Monday through Friday from 7:00am - 5:00pm and one of our friendly and knowledgeable agents will guide you through the process.
You will need the following information in order to request service:
- Preferred service start or stop date.
- Service address, including zip code or meter number.
- Social Security Number (SSN) or Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN).
- Credit card or bank account information for security deposit payment, if applicable.
Protect Your Property from Gas Shut-Offs
Enroll in Landlord Automatic Transfer, and if a tenant requests a gas shut-off, we transfer the account to you for a small fee, until a new tenant requests service. Call 1-800-764-0111 or email the form to CustomerCarePeoples@peoples-gas.com.
