Why Choose Natural Gas?
Natural gas provides a variety of benefits that can transform how you heat your home, cook your meals, and fuel your lifestyle. Here’s why so many families are choosing to Go with Gas:
- Efficiency and Savings
Natural gas is one of the most cost-effective energy options available. Our location atop the abundant Marcellus Shale gas supply enables Peoples to purchase the gas it delivers to customers at discounted rates compared to elsewhere in the country. These savings are passed on to consumers. It burns cleanly, helping you save on your energy bills while still maintaining a comfortable home. - Reliability You Can Count On
Natural gas pipelines sit underground, where they are more protected from bad weather and less susceptible to outages. Peoples’ vast network includes 15,000 miles of pipelines and ongoing work to upgrade that infrastructure to provide reliable service for decades to come. - Safety and Peace of Mind
We prioritize your safety through ongoing system maintenance and modernization. Our highly trained team works tirelessly to ensure safe and reliable service, with oversight from the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission ensuring the highest safety standards. - Environmentally Friendly
As the cleanest-burning fossil fuel available, natural gas generates fewer emissions compared to other fossil fuels, making it a smarter choice for the environment. The growing use of natural gas has actually reduced greenhouse gas emissions! - Versatility for Your Home
From heating your home and water to powering appliances like stoves, dryers, and fireplaces, natural gas offers unmatched versatility to meet your needs.

Why would I consider converting to natural gas?
It is much less expensive to heat your home using natural gas than oil, propane, or electricity. Customers can expect to save thousands on their annual heating bills by converting to natural gas. Unlike propane or oil, natural gas customers do not have to worry about purchasing their winter supply of energy in advance – as your utility, we deliver the energy you need, when you need it. Natural gas service could also have a positive effect on the value of your home, check with your real estate agent for more details. In addition, natural gas is much more environmentally friendly than oil, propane, or electricity.
What is involved in the conversion process?
There are four parts to the conversion process.*
The first step is extending Peoples’ mainline to your community from our existing lines. In many cases, the distance could be a mile or more away. Once the mainline is extended to reach your community we will then install our pipelines street by street.
The second step is installing house lines and converting existing appliances or connecting new appliances.
The third step is to connect each home or business that is converting to natural gas. This involves installing a customer owned service line that extends from our nearest mainline to the gas meter at your home or business.
The fourth, and final, step is restoring any disrupted streets, sidewalks and yards impacted during the mainline installation process to their original condition.
*The first and second step are the responsibility of the applicant except in areas where the gas company is responsible for the customer-owned service line.
How do I afford new gas appliances?
In some cases, your existing appliances can be converted to natural gas. In other cases, your appliances – furnace, water heater, range and dryer – may have to be replaced. Many residents find that the savings they receive from lower natural gas costs justify the cost to convert their appliances. In certain scenarios, the payback period for this investment can be as short as a few years.
What will happen to my current furnace and appliances?
Some newer furnaces and appliances can be easily converted to natural gas, especially those currently using propane. Other furnaces and appliances may have to be replaced.
Will I be responsible for mainline pipeline maintenance after construction is completed?
No. Peoples is responsible for mainline maintenance and associated costs and they are built to last for decades.
Who checks the gas piping?
For your safety, we make regular evaluations on your service line. We check from our main line to the meter or to the wall of your house (whichever is further). We also check the meter. You are responsible to maintain your piping, whether internal, external, buried, or exposed. We also recommend periodic inspection of piping and appliances to ensure safety. If you do not maintain the buried piping, it may be subject to potential hazards and leakage.
How long will the pipelines last?
Newly installed natural gas infrastructure can be expected to last decades. Peoples monitors and maintains pipelines to ensure safety, and regularly adopts new innovations in pipeline safety to protect our customers and communities.
Will I have someone to call regarding service or an emergency after gas conversion is completed?
Yes. Peoples 24-hour emergency operations center can be reached at 1-800-400-4271. We urge customers to contact us immediately if they believe a pipeline has been damaged, is leaking, or in the event of any other gas-related emergency. We also have staff available during normal business hours for service-related calls.
