Excess Flow Valves

Excess Flow Valves

Protecting your home and neighborhood with Excess Flow Valves.

Peoples prioritizes safety by installing Excess Flow Valves (EFVs) on new and renewed gas lines for homes and some businesses. These devices automatically shut off gas flow if a line is damaged or broken, helping protect your home and neighborhood.

As part of our pipeline improvement program, EFVs are installed on service lines that meet operating conditions. Customers can request an EFV installation before Peoples’ planned implementation, but they will be responsible for the installation cost, starting at $2,100.

For more information or to determine if your service line qualifies for an EFV, email EFV@peoples-gas.com or call 1-866-358-1735.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is an EFV?
An excess flow valve (EFV) is a device installed on the natural gas service line—the pipe running from the main line to your house or meter. It is designed to shut off the flow of natural gas if the service line becomes damaged, potentially preventing gas leaks from entering your home.
  • Can an EFV be installed at my property?
EFVs cannot be installed at all addresses due to operating characteristics and limitations. Peoples will evaluate your property upon request to determine if installation is possible.
  • How much does it cost to install an EFV?
The cost varies depending on installation difficulty, with a minimum cost of $2,100. A Peoples representative will provide a cost estimate after evaluating your property. To request an evaluation, contact us at 1-866-358-1735 or EFV@peoples-gas.com.
  • Who installs the EFV?
A Peoples crew will handle the installation.
  • When can I request an EFV?
You may request an EFV installation at any time.
  • Can EFVs be installed for apartments or multi-family residences?
Yes, EFVs can be installed for multi-family residences, provided they meet volume restrictions.
  • Why do I have to pay for the EFV?
Federal law did not require EFVs on older service lines. For properties where EFVs were not previously mandated, installation is optional and at the customer’s expense.
  • Can I make installment payments?
No, the full payment must be received before installation.
  • Will an EFV stop leaks inside my home?
No, EFVs only protect the service line up to the meter. They do not prevent leaks in house piping. If you smell gas inside your home, leave immediately and call our 24/7 emergency number at 1-800-400-4271 from a safe location.
  • Where is the EFV installed?
The EFV is installed on the service line as close as possible to the natural gas main line, typically near or in the street.
  • How long does an EFV last?
EFVs are designed to last the lifetime of the natural gas distribution system.
  • Who pays for EFV repairs or replacement?
Peoples will maintain and repair the EFV at no additional cost to the customer.
  • How do I know if I already have an EFV?
Contact us at 1-866-358-1735 or EFV@peoples-gas.com, and we’ll check if your property already has an EFV.
  • How long does installation take?
Once full payment is received, installation will be scheduled at a mutually agreeable date. Timing depends on factors like the number of requests, materials, permitting, and weather.
  • Will my property or landscaping be disturbed?
Possibly. Installation requires digging to expose the service line, which may disturb your property or landscaping. Peoples will make every effort to restore your property to its original condition.
