Keep our communities safe and prevent service disruptions during spring landscaping and home improvement projects using the Pennsylvania One Call system
In recognition of National Safe Digging Month in April, Peoples Natural Gas and its parent company, Essential Utilities, remind homeowners, businesses and contractors to contact 811 before beginning any projects involving excavation, no matter the size.
Contacting 811 is required by law for any excavation, from small improvement projects like planting shrubs, installing mailboxes or setting up swing sets all the way to major construction work. Contractors must call on behalf of their customers, and all residents are required to use the 811 service when completing any digging to ensure safety and compliance with the law. The call to 811 is free for homeowners.
“Spring brings an increase in construction projects and with it, increased risk to the critical underground infrastructure that serves our communities,” said Peoples Damage Prevention Manager Charles Brazier, a member of the Pennsylvania One Call Board of Directors. “Making that call to 811 makes a huge difference to protect gas and other underground utility lines, helping keep us all safe and connected. No matter how small the job, be sure to call 811 before you dig.”
The PA One Call system is a quick and simple process designed to prevent unnecessary hazards. Before beginning any project, follow these steps:
- Call 811 at least three (3) business days before digging.
- Wait for utility locators to identify and mark the location of underground lines.
- Respect the markings and use appropriate excavation techniques throughout your project.
- Notify the appropriate utility company immediately if damage occurs to pipelines, line markers, locator wires or warning tape.
