Shop for Gas
The Energy Choice Program provides Pennsylvania customers with the opportunity to select energy suppliers that best meets their natural gas and electricity needs.
With a legacy of service to Western Pennsylvania since 1885, Peoples is honored to be your Natural Gas Distribution Company (NGDC). As an NGDC, we provide two separate services:
- We purchase natural gas for your use.
- We deliver natural gas to your home.
While Peoples is the default natural gas supplier for customers, Pennsylvania’s Energy Choice program allows you to purchase natural gas from other licensed suppliers .
Peoples’ top priority is providing you with safe, reliable and efficient natural gas delivery. We also want customers get a good value for this essential service. We encourage you to closely review proposals from any Natural Gas Supplier. Make sure you fully understand the costs of each supplier, and compare this to what you would pay by choosing Peoples as your supplier. While there are a variety of reasons you may choose a third-party supplier, it’s important to us that you have the information you need to make the right decision for your home.
As a regulated utility, we are obligated by law to obtain the most reliable supply of gas at the lowest possible cost. We do not profit from the sale of natural gas to customers. Gas commodity costs are a dollar-for-dollar passthrough, meaning what you pay is what we paid to purchase those supplies for you. Below, you’ll find our Price to Compare (PTC). Use this information to compare the price the Natural Gas Supplier is offering to you. Be careful of introductory offers or flexible rates that change over time when purchasing from a supplier. You should compare your current supplier pricing to the Price to Compare shown on your Peoples bill every month. We update the PTC quarterly based on market conditions.
No matter who you choose to be your gas supplier, Peoples will continue to provide you with safe and efficient natural gas delivery, high-quality customer service, and quick response to any emergencies.

How to Shop for a Natural Gas Supplier
The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission is responsible for licensing natural gas suppliers. You can find an approved list on the PA Gas Switch website, or through the Pennsylvania Office of Consumer Advocate's Residential Consumer's Natural Gas Shopping Guide
While Peoples cannot recommend a supplier and recognizes the value of consumer choice, we don’t want to see customers paying more for their natural gas than is necessary.
Here are some questions to ask a supplier to make sure you understand what is included in their service agreements:
- Are you a Natural Gas Supplier licensed by the PA PUC?
- What are your prices and how do they compare to the default utility rate?
- Is the natural gas price fixed or will it vary throughout the year?
- Is there a cap on how high the variable rate can be?
- Does the price include all fees and/or taxes?
- What is the length of the agreement?
- What happens after the agreement expires?
- Are there any other fees, such as early termination fees?
- Will I receive one combined bill, including Peoples Natural Gas charges and my supplier’s charges, or will I receive two separate bills?
- Do you have a toll-free contact number to handle customer service questions?
How to Sign Up for a Supplier
Once you have shopped and compared Natural Gas Suppliers, contact your selected Natural Gas Supplier. They will walk you through the sign-up process.
After you choose a new Natural Gas Supplier (NGS) and enter an agreement for your gas supply, the NGS will notify us of this change. Peoples will then send you a letter confirming your choice, and this letter will give you 5 days to respond if you change your mind.
Choosing to participate in Energy Choice is available year-round, so you can select a Natural Gas Supplier at any time.
